Let's start a game and again.

Once again, I attended Gnome Asia Summit 2016.  I'm very eager to attend it every year.  This year is even more special because it was held in India, a historic and secret country.

The opening session in each year always shows the different culture in the hosted country.  Though all of us come from different countries and areas, but we were all in the world of open source.

This year I went to Gnome Asia Summit with Professor Tsung-Heng Chi.  We were very impressive to see that the organizer this year were very diligent with every single detail of every session.

Even more, we were touched with the feedback from the attendees.  Look at this photo.  The sessions had been closed for more than one hour, however many people were still standing there and discussing.

Gnome Asia Summit is not only a conference for free and open source software, but also an inter flow of friendliness and different cultures.  Just like this, the cricket in India.  You can join us and play the game as long as you want, no matter where you come from and if you have had any experience about this.
Just for fun.

Once again, we say goodbye to each other.  However in this internet era the physical distances is no longer a problem.  It was the end of this summit, but also a start of another trip.  Next time, more people will join and go with us.

Gnome.Asia 2015, here I come!

GNOME.ASIA 2015
Gnome.Asia 2015, here I come!  Isn’t it cool?
This photo shows how I was eager to attend Gnome Asia 2015.  Well, no, I’m not in this photo.  If I can attend Gnome Asia 2016, I’ll definitely take a photo like this.

Gnome Asia is not only a event for free software communities, but also a trip connecting technology, culture and friendliness.  The design this year made me think of last year in Beijing.  I’m also wondering where will Gnome Asia 2016 be held, and how the design will be.

This time in Indonesia, I’m especially happy to see my old friend Haris.  We knew each other in 2009, and I’m happy to see his excellent work in applying and developing open source systems these years.

See?  I’m so honored and proud for attending this event, not only because of my old friend Haris, but also every single attendee.  I’m so small in this group, but I’m so proud to be one of this group.

So, let’s applaud not only for Gnome Asia 2015, but also for every year, every one in Gnome Asia.  Our hands and hearts are always connected.

GNOME.asia 2014, I'm here.

gnome_0.jpg
Time runs fast.  It seemed not too long ago I just shared my thoughts and feelings about Gnome Asia 2013, and now I’m going to share about Gnome Asia 2014.  Every time I share my photos and feelings, I recalled many good moments.  This time I decide to use a different way -- to share my feelings via photos everyone shares.

Let’s start with this one: Kat held a sticker of Gnome logo.  What I want to say is that, this photo doesn’t show the beautiful girls behind the sticker clearly.  It means that, when we see all these great free software projects so clearly, we may miss all the great contributers behind these projects.  Though we can’t see Kat clearly in this photo, we can still feel the passion, and the best free software project GNOME, which she wanted to share with us.
gnome_b.jpg
This time the organizer in Beijing are so creative -- they perfectly bind ancient Chinese culture and current free software.  No matter the gong, the t-shirt, or the Chinese couplet with English on it, they are all mixed so perfectly.  This is another kind of happy hacking.
gnome_d.jpg
There are four group photos here, but each one has different meanings.  The upper left one is all the heroes behind the scene.  When you stand on the stage, all your efforts and dreams are realized, and you deserve the honor and applause.

The upper right one is my biggest regret in this trip.  I should go to Beijing earlier so that I can attend the beginner’s guide training course, so that I could get my first certification of free software in my life.
Finally, I show up in the lower right group photo.  This group photo made individual so small.  At that moment the two words on the slide were also in my mind: Thank you.  Thank you Gnome.  Thank you free software.
The smiles in the lower left photo are so shining.  It should be because all the moments from the previous three photos, so we know why we’re happy.  We’ll be together to face the next challence.  Here we are, the Great Wall!

INDONESIA? GNOME.asia 2015?
YES, if I have the right to vote, I’ll certainly vote for Indonesia.  I wish I can attend and share the deepest touch in my mind next year, in Indonesia.

GNOME & Footprint, Korea & Impression

This is my second time to attend GNOME Asia Summit.  I'm happy to see and talk with so many GNOME users from all over the world.  Special thanks to Karen Sandler and Allan Day from GNOME Foundation, they made me understand more about the present and the future of GNOME.

When I knew that GNOME Asia Summit started to call for paper, there were two different voices in my mind.  First, I had a great time in the GNOME Asia Summit 2012 in Hong Kong, so I expected to attend it again.  On the other hand, this is a great summit of free and open source software, but I'm not a developer.  Linus Torvalds once said, "Talk is cheap.  Show me the code."  I had never contributed a single line of code to any free and open source software, how can I stand on the stage and give a speech to all of the GNOME users?

Thanks to Max, he encouraged me at the moment when I was about to give up.  Finally I decided to submit my paper.  I was so excited when I knew that my paper was accepted.  I then understand that, the world of free and open source software is very open.  I don't need to be a developer to share something to you.

Since this is my second time to attend GNOME Asia Summit, I met many friends who I knew last year, especially Anish.  Before going to Korea, he came to Taiwan for a few days, and I was honored to take him to walk around Taipei.  We talked much about free and open source software, and our experiences attending GNOME's events.  When we went to Korea, it was Anish's turn to take me walk around Souel.  We had a great time.

No doubt, the 2700 seconds in my session made me very nervous, and it was a very good experience to me too.

In Taiwan we don't have many chances to face so many free and open source software users and developers to give a speech, not to mention to speak in English.  At first I wondered how many people would understand my bad English.  However, what impressed me was that, many people were interested in what I shared, and we had a deep discussion after the session.  I'm especially impressed with Bin Li and Tong Hui from Beijing, who were still discussing with Max about the questions I mentioned in my speech, after they went back to the hotel.

Before going to Korea, I expected to visit some schools in Souel, and would like to know how they use free and open source software in their campus.  It was a pity that we didn't get it.  I don't know how many people will see my article.  If you are reading my article, and you are also interested in promoting free and open source software in campuses, I hope that you can come to Taiwan to see how we do it.  Please feel free to contact with me. I hope that I can have more things to share next year in GNOME Asia Summit.

Show me the code.

GNOME.Asia Summit 2014
